I have a smart meter. My CH system is the conventional sort with header tank in loft and hot water cylinder. During the past few days, only two days (alternate days) did I have the boiler heat water (there was enough hot water stored).

On both days my smart meter recorded .51p and .53p in usage! The only thing that was using gas was the boiler pilot light - would a pilot light use that much gas in a 24 hr period?

I need to know this before complaining to my supplier

thanks

If that's 0.51p then not worth worrying about. If it's 51p (as in half a quid) then that is a bit much for a pilot light, you might have a leak somewhere. Turn the main gas tap off, see what the meter reckons

Yeah it’s 51p, as in half a quid. Like you, I thought that was a bit much for a pilot light. I heard these smart meters can be inaccurate, so seems it could be that or, as you say, a small leak

Didn’t turn it off, as such. Just didn’t use any gas appliance - including boiler (no cooking or heating the hot water) for the entire day.

so the boiler might have been maintaining the temperature of the HW cylinder as residual heat escaped.

Or, if it has gravity circulation and no timer, it might have been maintaining its own temperature.

Try it again after turning the boiler off.

The boiler is on a timer and shuts off completely until the timer kicks in. The timer was switched off.

Does the 51p include the standing charge? If so, how much?
