Self propell axle issue

Hi,
I use a Champion R484 SP
When im walking behind it the left hand rear wheel drags when on tarmac / concrete etc.
When in use on the grass it seems fine.

Ive taken both rear wheel assemblies of & all the bits som i right back to the plastic back plate.
I have noticed on the side that drags i can see the groove for the circlip to sit it.
See photo.
The drive shaft "red arrow" passes through the metal bracket "green arrow" Then there is a bearing & circuit.There should a visable groove for this circlip to sit in but i dont see it.
Ive removed the backplate so i just have the shaft & the groove is there but doesnt protrude past the bearing enough to apply the circlip.
I think this is my issue as the shaft will then want to ride towards the other side wheel causing this side to then drag.

Do these suffer from say a bent shaft etc ?

They don't suffer from axle bending issues but make sure that shims 403 are in the correct place and the bearing is pushed fully in to the backplate.
The small gear must be retained by a circlip.

With the gear in place this is the issue as putting to circlip on i see NO groove for it to sit in.

405 is a bearing which sits in the plastic backplate.
403 isnt present
 
Looking at your diagram- small screen here- part 403 are circlips.
Are you saying there are no grooves on your axle? There should be at least one right at the end to keep the metal drive pinion in place.

Yes there are grooves BUT i cant see one when assembled.
Shaft doesnt come through enough to see it.

When rain stops im in & out looking
 
There’s often some end float on the axle.....pull the axle outwards and see if that gives you the extra you need.

It must be bent a touch as even with pulling the axle towards me then make the groove the otherside dissapear
 
Sure - connect one of the back wheels up correctly and then pull the offending end towards you......I sometimes use a pair of molegrips on the underside to help hold it for me.
There's usually some end float within the gearbox.
Any bend on the axle would show up in the wheels, I think.....if they didn't wobble then there would be tight spots when rotating.

I’ve done that in respect of building one side up. I also placed the items in order to make sure the other side went back together the same.
I managed to pull the axle through. Put the circlip on followed by that one way cylindrical pin then the gear.
No groove shown for the last circlip so I’ve ran out of time and assembled it with one side without circlip.
 
Right, both ends have circlip grooves but as before, one just doesn’t come visible with the gear on.
So, the plastic backplate 402 is snug on the axle 407.
Is the bearing 405 pushed well into the backplate? Would you say the bearing is in reasonable condition?
Most designs only have the outer circlip, not the inner which is replaced with a thin shim.
Would you say the inner circlip is preventing the gear from sliding on fully?

Daft question but how about removing the other circlip?
Fit the difficult one and see if the other side is easier to fit?
 
Tiger cub rider,that’s what I did in the end but made no difference.

I replaced both bearings & cleaned out all the muck whilst there.
I was playing with this at least an hour and made no difference to what I did
