Wife has bought a lamp which takes 5 GU10 bulbs, the intention was to use colour changing bulbs from Lidi however the last bulbs done by Lidi were not colour changing, so looked on internet, however some are bluetooth, some zigbee, and I know in the past found bluetooth which would only work with one phone, zigbee has worked well, but the prices of some seem silly, and I can't see why some cost so much.

There is a duel aim, one to look good as it lights the dangling bits of the chandelier and two allow us to turn lights on/off with phone, idea was centre lamp always on only can switch off with app, other 4 on two way switch, so can get away with one smart lamp to start with.

But trying to select reasonable prices bulbs seems hard, specially trying to work out which are zigbee.

I tried these fairly low cost bulbs from TLC, The app was ok actually, does not require a smart hub which was a bonus, a big of a pig to sync them with the app, lots of turning on and off the switch, and changing wifi networks to the mini network created by the bulb. Up to 50 seperately controlled bulbs. I liked the way you had a choice of white colours, plus there was then the colour tab, where you could change the colours. Ultimately the reason I never continued, they just were not bright enough, in white mode, for normal living, but I can see they would be a fun addition if you wanted a house party, as they could be linked to be sound activated as well.

Be interesting to see what others say, but brightness was my issue when working on a computer and the like, but in a lounge for ambient lighting, might be ok for some.

I would have also liked the option to set a default when you powered up the bulb from the switch, so every time you turned them on, they started off at daylight white full power as an example. Be a right pain if you switched them off at 50% brightness and purple colour and then you turn them on the next day, and you have to get the app to change the colour. I think for smart lighting to work well, you need the ability to still use them via a normal switch as well.

for theatre type control desk and I'd be horrified if it didn't remember the last setting.
As to room lighting depending on an app... what happens when you run out of battery?

The light my wife bought has 5 bulbs, I was going to wire centre bulb to permanent line and 4 outer bulbs to switched line, so can always switch on centre bulb with an app or remote. We have ordered remote controls, we already have one for the lights we already have, and with zigbee we can set the remote to work a number of lights together, so it seemed the way to go.

However Lidi ran out of bulbs, and although the bulb shown by @pauldelahaye uses the same app (Smart Life) as zigbee, not sure if we can link to two remote controls one at top of stairs and one at bottom.

The problem is the hall is not used, the front door is never used, so there is a tendency for the hall to become a dumping ground for house hold rubbish like vacuum cleaners. Which means can reach the downstairs switch, and my wife seems to think a remote control and phone app is better than clearing the rubbish!

I thought I had it cracked, I refused point blank to change the ceiling light on the landing, I said no way am I dangling over the stair well to replace that, but then my son said no problem I'll do it. Dam.

So lamp bought, so I thought OK Lidi lamps, but again caught out, the first batch of zigbee Lidi bulbs were colour changing, the second batch were only dimming and colour temperature adjustment, and having a colour changing one at least in centre would look good, I thought no problem can buy one off internet, but a £50 for two bulbs that is going a bit OTT when the first Lidi one I bought was £3, it seems they were selling off old stock, normally £7.50 each so having to pay £25 for something I expected to pay £7.50 for has stopped the idea some what.

So the £7.80 bulb from TLC (I thought that was short for tender loving care) seems a good idea, as likely another 6 months before Lidi do them again. If the TLC bulb will not work with remotes, I can use one of the three non colour changing from my room which are zigbee until Lidi do them again, so I think the TLC bulb is the way to go until I can buy a zigbee set.

It was all caused by TLC from my son to start with, so using TLC to fix it seems right way to go.
