Not cars Per se, but this is some of the things I come across on a daily basis, worse of all it's normally a repair they've paid good money for..

Just beggars belief people can charge for this sort of mess and sleep at night.

I use heat shrink crimps with proper tool on wiring that needs to flex and solder/ shrinkwrap on stationary wiring.

Heard stories of alarms been fitted to cars and just twisted wires with tape over the top as well, shocking really.

Some bikes come out the factory with twist n tape wiring.
 
Not everybody is confident with the soldering iron. I would solder and use heat shrink tubing. Your solution with low temp solder tubes is more elegant though.

Years ago, my uncle set fire to the wiring loom on his Anglia when he was welding it. Me and my dad cut a section of loom from a scrap Anglia we had and repaired his loom using the same method - twisting the wires together and taping them up. There were about 20 wires in the loom and when we put some more tape around all of the 'joins', the repaired loom was as big as a fist!

I will solder/ shinkwrap on wire that is stationary but with the ignition the wire is always flexing with the steering so crimps are the best option there.

If it's strapped up to frame solder is best bet.
 
I've got this waiting for me tomorrow, customer has paid a pretty penny for a bobber conversion elsewhere and come away with this mess..

Randomly blowing fuses within 200 miles of the job, no bloody wonder!.

First off I wouldn't hang a 20 amp fuse off a 10 amp lighting supply but I think that's only the tip of the iceberg..

Been emailing the "elektronic box" manufacturer in Germany and they have been more than helpful.

Just twice as much work following someone else into a job unfortunately but customer wants it right and is prepared to wait which is nice!.

Looked a reasonably neat job to start with but it's just a complete mess, loom tape hides a multitude of sins..

It's actually fine if kept clean and a decent ground wire is used.
 
I've got a Buccaneer in as well, with an RD200 engine it it.

It has a mechanical charging regulator and the generator is also the starter (quite trick for 1980!).

RAC have fxxked his points and ignition timing so I've spent a good few hours at home reading up on how it all works.

Never a dull moment..

Chocolate. Locks on low voltage wiring, always asking for trouble, I don't like them in any wiring installation tbh.

They cause to much resistance and on vehicles to much moisture gets in and they corrode.

Scotch blocks are another of my pet hates, just connections waiting to go wrong.

Your repair is one of my preferred routes.
 
The starting system is known as Dynastart, it’s been around for a long time.
The generator/Dynamo, has two sets of windings, one for generating power, the other to turn the engine.
I had a Yamaha from 1973 and that had it. I can’t remember the model name but it will come to me.

Yep Dynastart rings a bell, I'm looking into doing a solid state conversion for the charging regulator (field winding control) and rewiring the start side.

To be fair the customer isn't bothered about the electric start so I think solid state field winding control is what I should be focusing on.

For me an RD350 CDI system with flywheel and generator grafted on would be a worthwhile project ditching the points but nobody would pay that as a proper job through the workshop..
 
I've got a 1980 CB 750 reguator at work, I might try rigging that up to the RD200 tomorrow, they have exactly same rotor and stator resistances so could be onto a winner..

what triumphs have you got ? One is a tiger cub ??? ( obviously)
