Looks like the lunatics

Having a stable middle east is in our interests as conflict causes migration which ends up migrating to the West.

However having military presence overseas is very expensive for the Tax payers.

It will be even more expensive for the past 20 years to revert back and then we have to step in again.pulli g out is the writ thing to do

Afghanistan isn't hte middle east but you're right about the costs; which is why America is pulling out. They must've spent trillions of dollars over the past 20 years and have bug all to show for it.
History should've warned them but they're faith in technology fooled them into beleiving this time it'd be different.
The trouble is there's no dealing with the Taliban and they will not stop until Kabul is back under control again. This gives everyone a problem. Pushing ISIS out of Syria and Iraq simply shifted the problem back on to the Afghan government which is too weak to control the country.
Jihad has become the big threat to Western powers and there's no way to contain it: like a virus it breaks out wherever it finds a foothold. The French can't contain it in Mali and Western Africa is just as vulnerable as the middle east to the extremists.
Some say China might be the next power to try their hand at conrolling Afgahnistan but i hope they're smarter than that.

My old man was an old style army career man and a bit of a desert specialist. Back in the 80s when Russia were in Afghanistan he used to say you might get them out of the towns but you'll never beat them in their own environment. Recent report are saying exactly that; the Taliban are taking small townships but probably won't penetrate the larger cities and larger towns in any numbers. This will lead to a civil war imbalance that will be terrible for the country and put a stop to any chance of progress for the people.

I did think that one outcome of this is that it is bringing the Taliban more out into the open and as a result they are losing lots of people to fighting. But then I realised I'm starting to sound like the old man!

Can anyone educate us as to what the taliban are fighting for. All I understand is the usual Islamic driven , insane nonsense, that has crippled progress in this country for decades. Anyone who lets say is gay , can look forward to being executed. Any women / girls who seek an
Education will be discouraged or murdered. Any woman accused of adultery could be buried in the ground with their heads protruding and be stoned to death. It’s a backward , savage , nasty religion. Have I gone wrong anywhere so far ?

When the fruit cakes were last in power

woman were banned from employment
Girls were banned from any form of education

woman guilty of or suspected of adultry were lashed and than stoned to death

any suspected of having had any association with Russians or Americans were found and executed

But you are doing that.

It is a common mantra that we should respect others' religious beliefs.

I am of course being facetious and pointing out the stupidity of respecting religious beliefs no matter how ludicrous and fanciful they might be.
Bless your heart

They are fighting for what they believe is their land. The USSR failed to eliminate them after a decade of war, US has failed after 20 years occupation. About time a different approach was made. Maybe time to accept that they have the right to self-govern, and offer diplomatic and economic aid to accomplish a safe partition of the country. But that is of course, wishful thinking. Will never happen. Within a year we'll be bombing targets with drones again.

Of course, they had Rambo on their side. It wasn't long ago that the West supported the rebel fighters in Afghanistan and even made films about how bravely they thought off communism!

Islamic fundamentalism wasn't a real threat until the Saudi Arabians and Americans fanned the flames of fundamentalism by investing millions in religious schools in Pakistan.
They used these schools as a breeding ground for fanatics to fight the Russians in Afghanistan.
The virus of fundamentalism has escaped from the laboratory and is infecting the world.
These fanatics aren't just a threat to Western countries, they want to overthrow moderate Islamic states as well.
