Waht can cause a sudden drop in miles per gallon?

My 'near miss' story involves racing my friend down narrow roads around Blackburn in (proper) Minis (note the use of the Capital M means this is a story about cars, NOT dressing up!).
Going full speed down a steep hill and braking hard for a 90 right onto a stone humpback bridge. That was the time the brakes worked...the next time was, luckily, after the stone bridge and accelerating up a steep hill. A car coming thther way forced the lead driver to brake (gently), my brake pedal went flat to the floor, gravity and handbrake only slowing the car enough to just bumber-kiss the Mini in front. All this the consequence of not dealing with a broken lower engine mount on the clutch side, the housing having worn through the steel brake pipe over several weeks.
lesson learned....stone bridges are very unforgiving.

OP, glad you got your caliper fixed.
