Blockage Rainwater drain

Hi.

There is a rainwater drain at the front of the house. Recently the heavy downpour resulted in the water rising to a level to nearly flowing into the house.

After the water receded to a level within the drain I cleared all the debris. The (square) aperture is only 125mm and the pipe leading out to the road seems to be about 75mm diameter.

I tried poking through but there is U bend there.

Can anyone advance an idea how I could clear this?. Or would I need to have it jetted?.

Would a plunger, probably work?

It depends on where, and what the blockage is. A plunger may work, but sometimes needs quite a bit of elbow grease. Does it go straight to the road, or via a manhole? If it’s shared, the local water undertaker may clear it for free.

If you hose the drain, (or pour a bucket of water down it), does it overflow again or does it drain away and leave a 'puddle' at the bottom?
If it doesn't drain away, or is slow to drain away, then using a pressure washer, (Karcher or similar), may blast the blockage away.
The U bend is to trap a measure of water to form a seal against odours from the main sewer run.
If you use a plunger you may force this water to fall below the top level of the U bend thereby breaking the liquid seal. This is easily rectified by pouring some water down so it reaches the correct level.

Does your home insurance cover the drains. The problem could be a blocked or broken pipe well away from the gulley. They often send drain clearance companies out in this situation. How old are the drains & is it possible you could have root damage from nearby trees.

Yesterday I used plenty of baking soda/vinegar. Waited for more than an hour.

Poured hot water. But the level remained high. Decided to leave it to (hopefully) work. Will check again.

Will check insurance. CBW: The drain goes directly to the road.

Never used a Karcher pressure washer. How easy to use?.

Why do you think vinegar would have slightest effect?

Could be that there is/was an issue with the road drain. Do you know if any neighbours are affected?
