I'm looking to build a timber frame awning in the alleyway that runs alongside my house as a cover for bikes. I want to attach the frame to the boundary wall, rather than the house, so I don't have to worry as much about getting a perfect flashing etc. The problem is that the wall is very uneven sandstone. I'm looking for ideas for the best way to fix a timber batten to the wall for the frame. For example, should I try to level it with cement?

Thanks in advance for any help.

It looks sort of level right up at the top.
One way of dealing with uneven walls is to scribe using an offset marker while holding the baton up tight and firm against the wall.
Imagine temporarily screwing the timber to the wall, then using a big penny washer with a pencil in the centre hole. Run the washer against the wall, tracing a corresponding line on the wood.
You then need to cut along the bumpy line so that it fits the wall closely

What I'd do is fit angled brackets to support the timber in 3/4 places. Then fit a timber, use flashing on the wall.

Hold batten up to wall and mark high points where batten touches the wall. Plug and screw to wall at marks but don't tighten screws fully. Fill gaps behind batten with mortar or filler. Tighten screws when mortar set. Voilla !!
