Citadel alarm panel with built in key pad has suddenly decided to get hot.

The outer casing is very warm, and there is an electrical burning smell.

Can't get there to investigate, but gut reaction is the transformer is causing this.

???

Mains supply has been isolated until I can get there.

Citadel panel is 24 years old.

Any thoughts on temporarily salvaging this?

UPDATE.

I turned mains back on, removed cover, put in code, reset.

The battery was still very warm.

Voltage 0.1!, casing beginning to split.

As luck would have it, I took with me some old 12v alarm battery I had in my garage - which was virtually identical.

Fitted it, replaced cover, reset.

Everything nice and cool.

New replacement battery on way.

Time for a beer.

Thanks to all who replied.

You will need to check the battery charging resistor is not burnt out. This is near the keypad area. Also check battery charging voltage is not excessive .
