Have just purchased a new breather for the pole saw fuel tank - never been involved with a separate breather before, always been done through the filler cap. I have the correct size pipe but can anyone tell me if if the pipe can be any length once it enters the tank or does it just have to be level with the bottom of the rubber bung please ? TIA for any help or advice.

Thank you for the quick response John. I actually mis-laid the original breather and pipe and I was certain that there was quite a length of pipe going down into the tank but couldn't understand how that would work if the end of the pipe was below the level of fuel.Just a few mm below the rubber bung will be just fine.

Generally on a 3 pipe system there is one long one with a filter on the end that draws up the fuel, one shorter one that returns fuel to the tank after priming and one remote breather that connects to any air space in the tank and heads to a terminal or filter somewhere in the engine casing.

Thank you John. Yes, got the long-ish pick-up pipe with the filter on the end going up to the carb, and the overflow pipe from carb back to the tank but surely, if the tank is completely filled to the top of the neck then the tank breather, even if just level with the bottom of the grommet, wouldn't allow the breather to work ? I suppose it gets away from the breather problems that can happen if the tank breathes through the filler cap. Moral of this saga - don't fill tank right up to the brim. You've been very helpful.
