I've been involved in structural design since the late 1880s, but will bow to your superior knowledge.
Indeed.

Sir I shall likewise bow to your more specialist knowledge of caissons, tunneling and other deep excavations.

Good day.

Not heard of baltic pine before! but I picked up a 12' long X 12" deep x 5" wide pitch pine beam from an old mill recently, it looked a bit tatty on the surface but when I cut a slice of the end it was solid. I was thinking of using over some bifold doors but I would need to quantify it to the bco?

Would it just be supporting a lean-to roof? If so, it should be OK.
If it's carrying a 1st floor wall above + part of a floor etc, it may still be OK structurally, but fire regs would require it to be plastered, which defeats the object of showing the timber.
(Fire regs don't apply if a beam is only supporting a roof).

Thanks Tony
It is a single story flat roof extension approx 5m square.
I would use it no problem, I will see what bco says.
