Chimney stack removal and fireplace

I’ve just had the chimney stack removed from my property. The builder who did the work left one hell of a mess!

He didn’t clean any mess up and there was a mountain of rubble behind the fire (higher that the fireplace!) And the house stinks of soot!

I have also noticed that there is a draft coming down the chimney now and this also stinks of soot!

Should the chimney be capped off in the loft?

Also is the brickwork correct behind the fireplace, it looks quite a mess! I would guess this was done when the coal fire was removed

Capped/sealed off in the loft and vented if the flue is on an external wall.

Not helpful!
But, when I spend any time working in the loft, I can smell the soot on me for weeks afterwards!
No-one else can though, I think it's something that can just get up your nose and stay there.
An independent nose may be required to determine if the smell has gone!

I thought I had a problem soil pipe vent valve in my loft .......but it was just (my) wind.
