Oh dear, I don't envy you telling the owner he needs a rewire.
And now it's working it'll be there another 30 years...Or needed one about 30 years ago ideally! No CPCs, and no RCD, so it's something of a can of worms.
As a short term fix, I've disconnected the offending switch drop cable completely, replaced the 2 rubber outgoing cables to the roses, and fitted a ceiling pull cord switch.
Those cables appear to have solid conductors. If that's not an optical illusion, isn't that rather surprising? As a short term fix, I've disconnected the offending switch drop cable completely, replaced the 2 rubber outgoing cables to the roses, and fitted a ceiling pull cord switch.
Only the 1/0.044" (0.98mm²) or rarely the 1/0.036". Otherwise it's 3/0.029" (1.28mm²).Most rubber twin lighting cable had solid, tinned conductors.
And now it's working it'll be there another 30 years...
The trouble is I've known far too many with a serious problem that beg for something to get them through an event of some description such as Christmas or the cats birthday etc then come up with all sorts of reasons why 'now is not the right time' to do the proper repair. You make a valid point but I suspect that this property won't be occupied by its current owners for that length of time. Any new owner will have to gut the place without a doubt.
