Outdoor light replacement - Common sense check

Good afternoon,

I'm replacing three existing PIR lanterns with non-PIR lanterns.

Removing the old units, it's just 3 core wire through the wall, which joins in a terminal strip in the new units.

I haven't installed outdoor lights before, and wonder whether anyone could cast their eye over the install. My thoughts are;

- That the cables just 'rest' inside the wall attachment (I've placed them in the upper half of the wall mount to hopefully avoid water). Is this arrangement fairly normal, or would people take other measures to protect the cables? The light included 3 short strips of heat shrink but I can't think what they'd be for.

- The wall attachment (the bit that screws into the wall and subsequently holds the lantern) has a gasket of sorts, which supposedly mates with the lantern unit. That said, it's made of plastic and deforms a bit when screwed to the wall. I've done my best but I wouldn't imagine the seal is that good. They're supposedly IP33, and at the least are under guttering etc, so shouldn't see much water anyway.

Ultimately I just want to know if you sparks would do anything differently, or whether these lights are just no good etc etc.

Looks like the usual cheapo tat.
The terminal strip should fit onto a peg or tab moulded into the top part of the plastic.
There should be a drain hole in the lower edge of the plastic part.

Nothing else needed or can be done.

No doubt that it's not cheapo tat.

What is not cheapo tat?

I have looked at various sites and it seems a lot of the more expensive products are rebranded but otherwise identical. I don't mind spending a bit more to get something decent, suggestions are welcome.

I've only installed one so far, with the view to getting some feedback then returning the other units if required.

Thanks for that. I did wonder if that was the case.

Again if anyone knows a supplier of quality lanterns (or could tell me what the difference would be between this one and those) then I'd be grateful.
