My Mum has a 15 plate Yeti 1.2 DSG Elegance.

The OEM rims are 7Jx17 ET45 and the tyres 225/50 R17 94W.

Are there any alternative sizes that will not alter speedo reading etc...?

What did you have in mind SS?

Not an expert, but arithmetically -

50% aspect ratio of 225mm. width = 112.50mm. height (rim to edge of tyre)

So if you calculate 11250 / width, this will give you the percentage required for the same height.

Therefore 11250 / 205 = 54.88% - so 55 would be the same.

However, I read that you can only have 195 to 225 on 7J rims and , obviously they don't come in infinite varieties.

She's had steel rims with winter tyres fitted and I wanted to check they were the right size.

Sorry, forgot to add the new steel rims are 16 inch.

Careful here.
If you fit rims and tyres different from the ones specified by the manufacturer in your manual, in case of a serious accident the insurance will start being a pain in the backside.
My car can only run on 225/50R17 XL, so I have no choice apart from the speed rating which goes H and above.

Thanks. The ins co's are fine with steel wheels and winter tyres providing they are the sizes recommended in the owner's manual.

Which they are!

Showing my ignorance here. If 225 is the width of tyre and R16 is the rim diameter, what is the 50 after the 225?

It's called the Aspect Ratio...the distance between the outside diameter of the rim to the outside diameter of the tyre.
John :)
