I had this new unit installed. Are all the switches meant to be like this? Some are up but some are down?

Thanks.

If you look you will see those two do not have any lables whereas all the others do.
I assume your electrician purchased a package which included 6 MCBs, which is usually the most economical way, and those two were not required for your property and they are spare.
I did almost the identical job in 2 of my flats last year.

Hi Jeff,

As Winston states, the switches that are down are off, and if you aren't having any problems with your electrics, then there's nothing to worry about!
They are likely to be spare ways, but your electrician should have labeled them as such to avoid confusion! :)

They have purchased a Screwfix dual-RCD clearance special which is supplied with a selection of MCBs in it, some of which are not needed.
A saving of £40 over buying a main switch unit and 4x RCBOs.

In pencil so it can be erased and relabelled if required

Why did you not ask the registered electrician who installed the consumer unit?

on the electrical installation certificate that he/she gave you, what is the descriptions for circuits 3&8?

3 is Unknown and 8 is 'spare'.

Why has my reply disappeared?
Don't know.

Possibly someone didn't like the comment that's it's not a fuse box, but a consumer unit.

Which of course is quite correct.

Your later remark about the unlabelled breakers perhaps being spares was bang on the money.

Maybe it's because you opened your post with that statement - who knows?

More to the point "What's that braided cable doing that comes out from the inners of the CU"

I prefer to remove unused MCBs. And why do people feel the need to keep unused ones “off”
