I'm not a builder...

I'm in the middle of refurbishing my house and came across a floor joist that at one end is not on a hanger or fixed in any way. The newel post is notched out and the joist sitting against it.

The house was built in the 1960s and wondering was this normal back in the day?

Well if it lasted this long :) its not the way it should be supported, don't know if it would work but what about cleaning away the paint from the newel and glue and screw a bit of timber to it, pushed it tight under the trimmer, it would add extra support, only a thought.

Thanks for the response tony7.

I think your suggestion is what I will do, unless anyone else has any alternative ideas?

Thats what I'd do and you might want to drill a pilot hole or two in that joist and add screw fixings to it, watch the joist dosent split on you.

Hope that helps :)
