Hi, we are getting a wood burner fitted and I was wondering if there is an option to retro fir a back boiler to it and feed my heating tank so we are less reliant on the gas boiler please?

not fitted yet and we are still looking at options so I’m assuming there are stoves with back boilers and separate back boilers available?

Thanks.

The ones with separate back boilers tend to be fairly low power so if you're wanting to power your heating off it (as opposed to just heating your water) then you'll need a proper stove with built in back boiler.

I was just thinking of topping the hot water up when the stove is on to reduce the use of the boiler not to fully power all the rads, do you have any good separate ones you could show me please?

is it just 2 pipes up to the existing storage tanks?

Rather more complicated than that I'm afraid. You need to have a system in place to ensure that water from the gas boiler can't circulate through the stove, and also a system to ensure the stove can circulate when the boiler is on. You're not allowed to have a pump to circulate the water from the stove, it must work via natural gravity circulation. There are various means of doing this but the easiest is to have a twin-coil cylinder, with one coil connected to the boiler and the other connected to the stove.

It won't be a cheap job though, you can easily end up sinking a couple of thousand into it, and it's work which is notifiable to Building Control so not normally a DIY job
