Just started thinking about the viability of automating my driveway gates.

Has anyone got any experience automating their garden gates?

Did you DIY it and what did it cost you?

Do the systems require maintenance or do they often break down if so can you give me an idea of what costs are involved?

Automated gates require regular inspection and maintenance, generally every 6 months. More often if heavily used.

It's not really a DIY thing either, as it's not just a case of shoving what's sold as a 'kit' of gate parts on there. Gate installations have to be properly designed with all of the required safety devices, which depends on the individual installation. Virtually all gate kits on the market today don't include most of what's required.
Cost wise expect to pay a minimum of £2000. It can be significantly more.

Those gates already have additional considerations as they are solid.
If those gates open outwards, automation won't be happening.

Thanks, Flameport, that's exactly what I wanted to know.

A friend of mine used to install them for a living but gave it up because of all the elf n safety hoops he was having to jump through.
