Damp proofing

Hi thank you for your help.
The was a complete independent survey carried out prior to the purchase.
I have just read this again. It does state there are signs of damp down stairs on the external walls and internal walls in the one bedroom (where the chimneys have now been removed). This wall was VERY wet but I have now removed all the plaster and cleared out the old fire place.
The survey does state , " as the property hadn't been lived in for quite a long time" , its quite possible that the walls might dry out with ventilation.
Sorry I cant provide photos, will ask my daughter to take some.

can you post the diagram plan that came wih the reportand what this independant person saidin the report?? dont post personal stuff of course.
If any wall or chimney breast was sopping wet then being a void house or havingcondensation has nothing to do with the damp conditions.
Do you understand the difference between chimney stack, chimney flues and chimney breasts?

I dont have a copy of my daughters house report, and they are currently away.
Regarding the question you asked. The bedroom wall adjacent (right hand side only) to the chimney breast was very wet. The fireplace chimney breast was wet, and both these areas the plaster just fell off the wall. Even within a few days this bare wall seemed to be drying out once the plaster was removed.
The downstairs walls both internal and external seemed to be more cold than damp.

I'm suspecting the chimney pots didn't have any cowls on them, the fires haven't been used for a long time and rainwater falling down inside the pots has soaked through the brickwork causing the bedroom walls to be very wet. If the stacks/pots have been removed and/or capped that should help prevent any more rainwater getting in.
Removing the old plaster will help it to dry out quicker, as will plenty of fresh air ventilation. I would now wait and check to see if it dries out of it's own accord. It may also be prudent to check the flashing and pointing around the stack if it is remaining and rectify as necessary.

I gather new flashing has been installed by the same people who took down the chimneys.
I really appreciate the advice you guys are giving me. Its reassuring.

What you have had taken down is a mystery to me? You have new flashing on what?What was takenn ddown and tiled over, i thought you meant the chimney stackwas dropped belowthe roof?
Theres nothing in your posts so far showing where the moisture was coming from? Drying out here and there doesnt explain the cause of where the moisture came from.
