My incompetent builder tried to prop this wall whilst putting a steel beam underneath it. That didn't achieve much, other than smash the lath and plaster at the bottom section of the wall. I tidied up the mess and would like to patch the gap. The question is how to do it. My initial idea is to screw a section of a new plasterboard (two 12.5 boards to make it flush with the old plaster) into the gap, tape the join and skim the entire partition wall. Is this a good way of doing this? If not, what's a better way if I don't want to remove the old plaster completely?

Yes. Or overboard the entire wall if you wanted.
I have another studwall like that that will be harder to patch. If i remove the plaster and board it, what thickness plasterboard would you recommend?

12.5mm, but as I said above, you could overboard it rather than removing the old laths and plaster. Less mess, quicker and more sound insulation.

Good idea but in this case it would look weird, unless I redo the architraves also

Yes that’s the only thing. Personally I’d still take the architraves off, fit some stripwood to bring the frame out and tack them back on, but agree depends on the situation

Should I use tapered edge or square edge boards?

I would like to remove the plaster on the second wall and board the entire wall. Square edge for this job also?
