No real alternatives to fossil fuels ..

Gas boilers banned......heat pumps as an alternative ....rubbish.

Too low a temperature heat out put to be any use in typical British homes good on Swedish highly insulated homes but not here.

Can't be used on micropore systems, rads need to be bigger or underfloor wet heating with its associated costs.

Open up coal mines and convert power stations to run on coal again ......its a 'flash' process ....the ignition of coal dust.

Ah, not great.....

But
China's, per capita, isn't currently very high because they have so many dirt poor folk, but it's rising quite worryingly. Still building coal fired stations. In 2019 China's greenhouse gas emissions were twice as much as the United States, which are falling.

If the world's biggest polluter isn't reducing, then any we do makes little difference, and not much sense. Why take the short term pain if longer term doesn't change?

Coal isn't cheap.

Given gas prices since those, it looks like solar and wind will win anyway.
ASHP worth the hassle? I don't know. Doubtful?

We probably "off-shore" even more. Afterall, all the shyte we buy has to be made somewhere using energy. It happens to be made in China (or Germany if we're talking cars) - that they are building 100's of coal fired stations is to satisfy the economic DEMANDS of the west. To their economic benefit but the detriment is mutual.

It's too late now for these eco plans to save the planet, its over, its only a matter of time for things to totally collapse unless events take an unexpected turn.

But not to have electricity because we can't generate enough because we haven't got a coal industry is ridiculous. We depended on cheap coal from South America after shutting all the mines and now we're depending in part on a cable
from France.

A ridiculous state of affairs.

By the way how do you heat a house without gas or a multifuel stove that's a back to back terrace when there's nowhere to fit a heat pump ? Air or ground source.

Yes I think we're witnessing the beginning of the end of the human race's "success" story. Even if everyone wasn't too greedy to stop trashing the place, it's too late now. It was always bound to happen sooner or later, so why not let it happen now? Future generations will just have to deal with the inevitable, whatever that is.

I don't think the targets are for total elimination of harmful emissions, just a worthwhile reduction.

Air to air can go on the roof.
Scope for economies of scale, even.

Use a Zorbing unit (Vaillant had one) to produce hot water from low grade solar ,too.
