Hi,

Our laminate worktop right next to the hob got damaged/cracked.
We used one of them worktop repair companies that did an ok job I suppose, but the repair after 6 months seems to be rubbing away and I wouldn't be surprised to see the cracks appear again sometime soon.

My concern is that water will seep into the wood underneath the laminate when cooking and eventually cause further damage.

So are there any ideas or suggestions that I could put around the hob edge and worktop to protect the damage in future?

Thanks for any advice.

Have you considered using wood stain to protect against water damage?

Get in touch with the worktop repair company and tell them you are unhappy with the work that you paid them to do. Tell them to come and check it. If it is failing after 6 months, they may do another repair free of charge.

It's probably worth asking your repair company to have a look and make sure to check if they offer a warranty or guarantee. Typically, worktop repair companies do provide a warranty but that may vary.

Thanks for all your replies.
Contacted the repair company who have thus far not replied. Reading up since, many seem to have the same problem of poor repair and then no reply.

The repair actually came about from A.O.com installing the hob and managed to damage the worktop, so was them that paid for the repair.
In hindsight I should have pushed for a replacement worktop not repair.
But might contact AO and ask that they make contact with the repair company to see if that helps.

Repair has really wiped away now as per pic

if ao arranged and paid for the repair you contract is with ao and no one else so they should fully deal with it whether they will or not is another matter

Response from AO after asking if they could contact the repair company and ask that they respond to my emails.

Unfortunately we would be unable to assist in this matter. The claim has been settled our end and we authorised the work from a contractor which was supplied by yourself.

We do state that this was accepted in full and final settlement and no further costings would be taken into consideration. You would need to refer this to the company who completed the repair.

So......looks like have to hope the repair company respond and agree to fix under what you would expect to be at minimum 12 month warranty.
Or put up with how it looks/pay to replace myself.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing........should have gone all out from the start and asked for replacement.
Oh well.

I wouldn't waste any more time on getting it repaired by the same person, if you sourced/selected the tradesman and AO just funded the repair then they've kinda got a point - did you pay by credit card? Personally I'd try elsewhere - it's not right but sometimes you gotta just move on. How much did it cost?

Oh yeah AO are playing fair. As I should have requested replacement from the start but thought repair would be OK.
Was more hoping AO would help to get a reply from the poor repair place.

Repair place invoiced AO direct.

Make you right. Think if going to carry out any further repair, then will need to be via another company.
Think the repair was circa 165 without trying to find the quote.

Well if the tradesman invoiced AO directly and they paid him then AO must be responsible surely, the tradesman has no contract with you surely?

Good point. Will ask them if they can help to get a response based on the invoice being direct.
Might help.
Thanks.

Did they say "We do state that this was accepted in full and final settlement and no further costings would be taken into consideration.", at the time, or only now?

WHo suggested a repair?
If they did, do they expect you to accept a repair that lasts 5 minutes.... a week or two.... or a repair which is of a quality consistent with the normal practice - which would be at least a year.?

You sure it's a laminate? Every time I look it seems more like a solid wood worktop with a bevel on the end! If it were laminate I'd expect a capping strip next to a hob to protect the chipboard. Looks like you have endgrain?

Thanks for your reply.

AO did in fact say in full and final settlement.
Which is fair enough. And in hindsight I should have said want full replacement from the start.
But the damage was minor and after Google search came across these various repair companies, that on the surface state they can fix these types issues no problem and show plenty of before and after examples etc.
And I thought this seemed the less intrusive option rather than complete replacement.

So it was me who suggested it to AO. So again no bad feeling towards them.
But I thought they might at least lend a helping hand in contacting the repair company to make amends for both their mutual customer.
As that is all I've asked of them is to make contact to try and force a reply.

But AO have since come back and said even though the repair company invoiced them direct, it's my issue to resolve, and it's all closed their end now.

And still no reply from the actual repair company. Who clearly don't care it would seem.

Definitely laminate. It's the colmar oak laminate worktop and was installed by magnet.
Does look nice for a cheap laminate to be fair.
