I don’t suppose it could be anything but a gas leak. But what a mess, I can’t imagine how they survived.
How did nobody get a sniff of gas beforehand and raise an alarm?

And in the early evening. Perhaps they did and turned a light on to investigate the smell? I'm always wary of gas and regularly turn it off at the meter, wait a good while then before turning it back on - a shhh noise as it repressurises, suggest a leak.

quite a few blasts like this are not natural gas related despite looking like they must be

So what are they? I think I read somewhere that most gas explosions are to do with fiddling the meter. Not saying this was the cause in this case but houses don’t just blow up. Somethings amiss.

Trying to fiddle the meter and/or incompetent work on the installation.
