What does the mot allow regarding slight play which you can feel with a shake of the wheel?

It's all subjective - what one tester will call dangerous, another will pass but on MOT courses, we were told that MOT standards are minimum standards and when something is classed as 'excessively worn' we were told that 'excessive wear' means the item is about to fail. Slight play should just be an advisory but I wouldn't want any play on any joint of any vehicle of mine.

Noted, thanks All!

Are the ball joints easily tapped out/in or is a whole new arm easier?

Hyundai i20 1.4 2009 PB model.

I believe the ball itself is splined in and circlip locked but I don't know how tight its in the arm.

Yep. In my day we'd overhaul engines, gearboxes, axles, starter's and dynamo's. We'd fit new valve guides to cylinder heads and lap in valves. We'd rebuild brake wheel and master cylinders, fit new linings to brake shoes and clutches, solder and repair radiators, sand-blast and test spark plugs, strip and rebuild carbs, replace propshaft UJ's, replace spring shackles, replace king pins and ream out the bushes etc etc. Hardly anything was ever replaced.

Blueprint manufactures both the whole wishbone and the ball joint so I have my options.

For me, if it’s just a worn ball joint, that’s what I’m going to replace.

TRW, Lemfoerder, Delphi are brands with a reasonable name. I've seen a few horror stories on Landrover Freelander fora, where the bottom balljoint is riveted, but you can grind the heads off the rivets, punch them out and fit new balljoints with nuts and bolts. However, people have subsequently put up photos of wishbones that have rusted through completely. It's hard to know what to do for the best. On my 30 year old Alfa, I tend to replace the big rubber bush on the back of the front wishbone every few years. The smaller one at the front of the wishbone never fails. I'll maybe fit two balljoints in the life of the wishbone but after that, they get worryingly "crispy" so I get a complete wishbone.
