Government vote to dump sewage in our waters

The Marine Conservation Society warned earlier this year that without the European Bathing Water Directive, which was introduced in 1976, British beachgoers would still be swimming in sewage. Back then, Britain was labelled the ”dirty man of Europe“.

76?, FFS you couldn't even drink water from a tap in mainland Europe.

so you say. Which European countries did you visit in 1976?

And after 11 years of Tory contempt for the country, you need to wear wellingtons and rubber gloves to paddle on the beach or in a river. And it's getting worse.

You can't pretend it would have been any better under any other government, as I highly doubt it will have been.

This sewage dumping isn't a new phenomenon.

They say it's because they have struggled to get chemicals, which is just poor planning, or an excuse to save money. Yes brexit likely made it tougher to obtain but they've had plenty of time to prepare.

I'm not sticking up for the Tories, but let's use some logic.

This is something the environmental agency and the water companies should have just been doing off there own back, making and designing systems that stop this dumping.

It shouldn't have got to the stage it has now.

Which ultimately means the environmental agency frankly isn't fit for purpose

Well it is reliant on Victorian infrastructure.
They have had a few of years to sort it out.

This is something the environmental agency

which the Tory government has control over.

Yes brexit likely made it tougher to obtain
Brexit was enabled by Tories, so their fault.

The Tory govt has been in charge for over a decade, they had power to prevent it happening.

Environment agency has been under Tory power for over a decade….so it’s the fault of Tory govt.

Whether the cause is privatisation, Brexit, lack of control over water companies or lack control over environment agency……it all comes back to Tory fault.

You can't pretend it would have been any better under any other government, as I highly doubt it will have been.

Since the Conservative government ordered Johnson's sheep to vote against Lord Wellington's amendment, and spread false stories about it being impossible and unaffordable, there is no "pretend" about it.

This is what it said:

"Amendment text
In Clause 80, Page 74, line 34
at end insert—

“141ZA Duty on sewerage undertakers to take all reasonable steps to ensure untreated sewage is not discharged from storm overflows

(1)A sewerage undertaker must demonstrate improvements in the sewerage systems and progressive reductions in the harm caused by untreated sewage discharges.

(2)The Secretary of State, the Director and the Environment Agency must exercise their respective functions under this and any other Act to secure compliance with this duty.”

Yeah, and the sewage system owners have not made any attempt to do any of that, And nor has the environmental agency enforced any such measures.

Under Labour govt we wouldn’t have Brexit, so I doubt it.

No they would have had another vote, which judging by the general election would likely still have led to a brexit outcome, it would have just delayed it

Rachel Wyatt, water quality programme manager at the MCS, said last night that EU directives have been ”instrumental“ in cleaning up water quality at UK beaches

It’s Jolly good being part of the European Union (y)
It could be argued that the Urban Wastewater Directive had a greater impact. It resulted in the building of sewage works in catchments that would otherwise be discharging untreated sewage into the sea and esturies. I was at the opening of Bridlington Sewage worksjust over 20 years ago, where they had not just secondary, but also tertiary treatment. It really made a difference.

Before UWWD, we had Hull discharging raw sewage into the Humber, Yorkshire Water trying to get out of building a sewage works by claiming Hull was a coastal city (this even made it on HIGNFY). We now have a much improved water system, and only storm overflows that discharge raw sewage on high rainfall events (in Brid etc)..... apart from when it doesn't. And when they run out of chemicals owing to Brexit.

The EA has been cut back, so they can't regulate as well as they used to, but the way that rivers are graded has changed under the EU in recent years, so the criteria is more strict. So if you see that our rivers are failing, you need to take this into account.
