Do Unvented Hot Water Cylinders, once installed, need to be registered as fitted and if so who with?

Thanks in advance

OOPS just found this and to clarify; does this mean the installer of the unvented cylinder must notify Gas Safe Register they have installed a New Unvented Cylinder on an old heating system and if so, would the customer receive certification of the Newly installed cylinder at a later date from GSR; similar to a Building Compliance Certificate when a new heating system has been installed?

What are the Rules for Notifying the Installation of a HW Cylinder?
We have received lots of questions about clarification on the rules around notifying the installation of a HW cylinder through GSR. We’ve clarified with GSR, and here’s what they’ve said:

  • If the installer has fitted a cylinder only in a house to an existing gas heat producing appliance that they did NOT fit, then they can notify the installation of the cylinder via GSR so long as they are registered to do so.
  • If the installer has fitted a cylinder only in a house where the heat producing appliance is supplied by a different fuel (electric, oil, biomass etc), then they cannot notify the installation of the cylinder via GSR even if they are registered with GSR. This would need to be notified directly to the LABC or through a different Competent Person Scheme.

It needs to be installed by a G3 qualified installer, and registered with Building Control. Once registered you will receive a compliance certificate. Installers have a number of self-certification schemes to choose from, of which Gas Safe is one. There's also OFTEC, NAPIT, APHC, and probably others too.

So basically, they can self certify but must register the newly installed cylinder with one of the above governing bodies you mention?

If you don't have a copy of the compliance certification, how could I find out who the cylinder is registered with and get a copy?

Thanks again

Ask your installer. Their details should be on the commissioning certificate on the side of the cylinder

That's the problem, there is none fitted, so basically, it would be impossible to find out who installed the cylinder if multiple registering organisations are used?

Yes you're very unlikely to be able to find out who fitted it if the commissioning certificate wasn't filled in. It's possible that the installer wasn't registered with any of them of course, in which case you're already at a dead end
