Construction and footings for small garden wall (numerous threads merged)

You should remove the layer of top soil or soft ground which tends to be about 250mm.

You could lay a block flat. Otherwise 100 by 250-300mm wide

Hi all,

Looking to make a small wall for a raised bed with concrete block. Wall height is approx 430mm

What size footing would you advise
height x width.

Thanks

How many 25kg bags of ballast and cement would you say i need for a concrete footing that is

28metres long x 125mm deep x 200mm wide. looking to make a 6 to 1 mix.

thanks

You need 1.5T of ballast - say 2 grab bags or 60 x 25kg bags, and 10 bags cement. Buying ballast in 25kg bags is an expensive way of buying it!

Thanks I saw that link before. Only seems to work out at 40 bags.

I've been calculating anywhere between 50-75bags so not sure how accurate that is

If you go for the 50-60 bags of ballast (or bulk bag equivalent) and 10 of cement, as suggested by @Charlie George , you should have more than enough to do the job.

It's not as if your usage as footings for a raised bed is as critical as say, the footings for a two storey extension!

You don't need to overthink this! :)

thanks buddy. yeah my problem is i dont have any access to the garden, short of bagging it up and carrying it through the house another question, i have lots of old bricks left over i want to get rid of can i just dump into the bottom of my footing and cover over with concrete, would save on concrete and get rid of the bricks in one go.

thanks

Hi All,

I have a number of old bricks i want to get rid of. im in the process of digging out a footing for a raised bed ( only 2 courses high of concrete block) which i will pour 125mm of concrete into, just had a thought, can i dump my old bricks into the footing, would save a bit on concrete and get rid of the bricks.

two birds with one stone as they say. or is this a bad idea

thanks, complete novice here if you haven't noticed.
