Noise from wind chargers can be a problem, also ice, if the wind is not blowing ice can form on blades, then latter when it blows it can be propelled some distance, over speed also a problem, so in the main solar is better, only time solar fails is when it snows.

I would think the Falklands has a tad more wind than Essex, and even with old solar panels in late 80's when I was there, solar would keep the electric fences working better than wind. It was normal to have 100 MPH wind there, which is why nearly no trees.

I'm a bit surprised at that, I recent tested a decent quality 100w panel on a dull day & all the thing could manage was between 4 & 8w :whistle:
 
Much depends on the controller, some are switch mode and vary the input voltage to get maximum out of the panel, the same with wind chargers. In fact some controllers have inputs for both wind and solar.

Panels need to have even illumination, as they basically operate at an efficancy equal to the lowest level of illumination on the panel.

A solar panel is composed of a multiple of individual solar cells.
And if just one of those cells is covered by shade then that cell limits the flow of electricty - dramatically efefcting the efficenacy of the whole panel.
I see it as the cells in the shade acting as resistor that pulls down the rest of the cells in the panel.

Deliveries from China tend to be much quicker than they used to be, when they estimate delivery they play safe and give an outside estimate.
Not from eBay recently. In fact not arriving at all. :( It is especially frustrating when they say the item is located somewhere in the UK.
 
That will be the big new sorting centre, which I think is near Heathrow.
The ad said it was located in Manchester, I could have walked there & back from Cumbria in the delivery time they were quoting. Like you I assumed they were playing safe & I would get it earlier but I guess they would say they ran out of stock in Manchester & had to order some more from China.

The best guide is the delivery date they quote, rather where they suggest they are located. If it's a long delivery time, it isn't really in the UK. If a reasonable delivery time is quoted and they exceed it, then cancel the order.

I know you say "decent quality", but like with LED floodlights, there's a huge amount of stuff out there on the internet that claims to be ***watts but in reality is nothing like that. How big is the panel you bought? I would think a 100w panel should be about 4ftx2ft?

You haven't said what you're running off the batteries?


I've got I think a 50w panel, hooked up to a battery from the scrappys, and it's been running an electric fence every night for 18mths - this is in the north of Scotland, and the panel is in a poor location (must get round to making a new mount for it!!). Never had to charge the battery off the mains yet.

Slight crossing of wires (no pun) here, I am not running anything myself at this time.
What I was actually doing was testing out a new Jackery 500w power bank for a friend while he was away & subsequently attempting to re-charge it with the solar panel from the same maker. I didn't measure the panel, but it wasn't as big as you suggest. The entire kit is back with it's owner now, but I can ask him to measure the item.
