i have used this sort if thing before
https://www.screwfix.com/p/plasplugs-hollow-door-fixings-6-x-23mm-20-pack/5255k
for fixing handles to a hollow hardboard door
Not great
We have also used a hanging affair then goes over the door for a cloths hook type of thing

I have also managed to use these before
https://www.screwfix.com/p/plasplugs-all-in-one-wall-plugs-52-pcs/8120k
on hollow doors, a bit messy getting the right the depth , i seem to remember

I have used those hollow door fixings, you linked to hang a cloths hook wooden bar , but that was on plasterboard and had a larger cavity behind
I picked up a box of assorted sizes from Lidl

Yes, my local hardware store suggested the first type, but as far as I can see they just grip by virtue of the screw pushing the plastic out. I wasn't convinced that that would work very well.

I've done it very successfully before on another door but don't remember what I used and am not keen to undo the screws in case I can't put them back in.

the ones you posted the metal is pushed out by the screw , similar thing.
I had a lot of success with the plastic on plasterboard in the past.
I have not done so much on the hollow doors as the hardboard is so thin 3mm cover i think, tend to use the ones i linked to first

Some hollow doors are so flimsy hanging weight on them can cause them to bulge , (the two sides are not connected except at frame).

What type of screws do you suggest I buy for fixing a coat rack to a hollow door, 34mm thick? It's just made from cheap hardboard, I think. I bought these https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B009HN8J3G/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1, but think I was sent the wrong product (or at least I'm misunderstanding something, as the length of the bodies of the screw is about 40mm, so they're completely useless for my purpose).

Thanks.

The cavity fixings that you purchased are for plasterboard walls. I often use them but they won't work in your case because the "teeth" will not dig in and they will be prone to spinning as you try to tighten the screw. Additionally, the hard board will not be thick enough. Personally, I use the setting tool when using them. It pulls the screw forward and forces the "arms" to splay outwards.

There are nylon plugs that will pull along the thread and bulge out when it eventually meets the inner face of the hard board. Tox make ones that I have used with hardboard doors in the past but you can't buy them in the UK any more.

You could use traditional spring toggles but as you are aware, when you remove the screw, the toggle will fall into the cavity. That said, you could always buy a few toggles for the odd occasion that you need to remove the coat rack.

There are "newer" generations of toggles that can be reused but the hardboard will be too thin.

The plasplugs are not working. The weight of the clothes pulls them out so that the hanger sits at an angle of about 20 degrees from vertical. I'd better try some spring toggles. Only problem is they all seem to be at least 50mm long and my door is just 34mm wide. I suppose I can just saw the screws shorter.

mostly i used for handles
As posted before
We have some fancy versions of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07SQ1J...parkle_lsi4d_asin_0_img&tag=diynotcom-21&th=1

Not sure where she got them from, ikea/Dunelm probably
and only last week, when I had finished added all the mouldings to all the 7 doors in the hall.
I also cut these so they only had the top section and screwed them into the top of the door
I had taken all the doors off, and replaced the hinges, as she wanted black

Maybe that would work better , if you have a lot of weight

If you are trying to hang a lot of weight on a hollow core door it is probably best to use a wooden pattress glued and pinned to the face of the door to give you more area to attach to the door. A single hook simply won't hold. Where the pattress is going on the door will need to be scraped back to the "wood" as glue onto a painted or lacquered surface will not hold long. If you use something like 18mm softwood or even 18mm MDF (with nice bevelled edges) you should be able to fix a hook or hooks to the pattress

Have you considered one of those that just hangs over the door?

Then there are issues of how I close the door. If I've managed it once then I can do it again.
