I guess this is why the gutter is leaking

Second part like this - whoever installed these gutters should be shot! Probably contribute to the damp problems.

I've tried to bodge it, but that didn't work. Need to replace a whole section!

Replacing it all is the best course of action, but the existing (or a new double) union moved one inch to the left would likely sort it too.

I have a spare union somewhere, and a spare bit of gutter I think ... might cut out a bit and put back a slightly longer bit.

Not got time to change it all, and def a job for summer as it's a long stretch that'll take a while.

Fair play. I'd say if you can reposition the DU so that the rubber seal on both sides is covered by the existing gutter you'll be fine...looks to me like there's sufficient gutter there already to do that.

Belt and braces to give the outside of the gutter a clean before fitting the DU so that the rubber seal makes a clean connection.

OK, will give that a go again. The rubber seal was not even in place, somebody left it on the roof!

I think it worked! There's a scary looking gap still where water is pooling, and the next bit is higher (I tried lowering a bit but did not make much difference) so I put some tanking tape there. No idea if that will make any difference, but so far it seems OK. It had a watering can pass through and no dripping yet.

Hopefully this will see me through winter at least.

I think I am down to one leaking gutter section now on the other side of the house.

hopefully this will dry out now

It's about 20m of gutter, and to complicate things (maybe) the extension end drains into a soakaway in the garden, and the old front end drains in the mains drainage.
So, if I did replace it all, I would probably want to drain all into soakaway on both sides, so I can reduce my water bill a bit (about £40/yr I think - so over 10 years ... might be worthwhile).

I'm not sure what tanking tape is but gutter connectors intentionally allow thermal expansion, so sealants etc only work until the temperature has changed a few times and they break off. If you have the windows open on a cool day and the sun comes out on them, especially black ones, you can hear the brackets clicking and ticking as the gutter expands in the brackets and moves.

My the it was a really hot day when these were installed - that would explain all the gaps!

Tanking tape - I had some aquaseal for sealing tilebacker board joints, which is apparently waterproof, so thought worth chucking some on to help stop the water getting in.
Probably not needed!

I am starting to think that it was some con artists - an old lady lived here before me, one day somebody put a chalk cross on the wall, which some say is a message cold callers do to target homes. I have had a few people offer their services over the last few years, far more than I had in my previous house. I wonder if somebody "inspected it" and pulled the rubber off, before informing the lady that the leak would cost £2000 to fix.

bloody thing started dripping again!

Will have to cut a bit out and replace. Grrr

In this wind it may well be that the sitting water is being blown over the gutter, rather than a leak.

Have a look at the other DU on the short gutter…if that has been cut correctly you may find another inch of gutter to play with by just moving the whole thing to the right.

JP. The photo of the union you showed is good on one side and very short on one side! un screw the union and knock it too the left say 20-30mm and this will give you a better chance.

They walk over time, due to the expansion and contraction. They need to be long enough to overcome that, when installed.
