ranch style stairs

I've got a set of old fashioned looking 1970's wimpey "ranch" style stairs and was wondering if anyone has experience of boxing them in and fitting a nice banister instead of the planks of wood.

Can it be done ?

Did you ever go ahead with this?
I did the same job last year with Hemlock spindles and bannisters & boxed in the stringers. Happy to post pictures if you are still considering.
