Hi.

I have removed the lining paper from the celining of my 1890 terraced house. There are lots of old cracks and the surface is generally shabby.

I am going to get the celing replastered.

It is better to tear doen the old lath and plaster ceiling and re-board it or can the boards be nailed directly over the shabby plaster surface?

What are the pitfalls of doing this? Is it better to tear down the old surface first?

Any advice would be really helpful because my plastering knowledge is almost non-existant.

Many thanks,

Matt

you dont have to take down the old ceiling, just plasterboard over ,that will prevent it cracking again.,it will be fine as long as it is nailed/screwed properly to the joists, then either skim with board or multi finish or use tapered edge boards and tape and joint
