Can Cadent Put A gas Pipe On Top Of A Path?

Hi,

Cadent have decided to replace the gas mains in the whole road and install new meters on the front of all the properties. The old meter is/was at the rear of the property next to the boiler inside. They have run a copper pipe to the front of the house which is pretty ugly but I don't think there is any choice on that. However you can see from the picture they plan to run the old connection pipe (which went underground to the rear) on top of the footpath/raft foundation at the front of the property. This looks like a real trip hazard and dangerous way to do it. Are they allowed to lay it on top of the path. Thank you.

That looks like a piece of old pipe to me....

This is still very much "work in progress" ... Are you sure that isn't a temporary thing while they progress with other parts of the work?

Hi that piece of pipe is the original pipe under the front garden that went to the right in the mud and behind the yellow cone on the right and then under the gate to the rear of the house. It was buried all the way to the rear. They have exposed it and turned it 90 degrees to the wall and the new meter. The supply is disconnected. They are supposed to reconnect tomorrow and turn the gas back on. Just looks like a trip hazard to me.

I cannot imagine for one moment it'll be left like that, they use this opportunity to replace the steel service pipework to the property, before it corrodes any further and starts to leak. I suspect that is a temporary setup to put the gas back on overnight, they'll return, cut off the steel underground an thread a new plastic service through the redundant steel pipe to save any further digging and disruption.

I hope they do something with it because the whole job is ugly. Gone from having the gas pipe underground to this. This is the feed which will go from that new meter to old meter area and directly to the boiler.

Cannot believe any utility company be it gas,water or leccy have authority/powers to run supplies mounted around external walls without express permission of house owner

Hi, They only looked at where the old meter was which was below the existing boiler in the house and that's all.

Hi, There hasn't been an option of choice. The whole road is being done and they are all privately owned houses. Some people are even having their pattern imprinted concrete dug up to run pipes without a choice.

If they tried to do that to my imprinted drive I'd tell them what to do. And do research to find whoever is above Cadent in authority, probably muster the other residents too. As it happens they ( southern gas networks) are replacing our mains and connections to meters. In my case they will put a plastic pipe through the old steel. But there is a " syphon " in the run . I know it's exact position in the drive and know they will have to remove/reinstate the block paving ( I have spares ) I want it a good match to existing ...or

Tell them what to do ...
What leave you disconnected from the network unfortunately its not a case of them just changing the pipework for the fun of it and not every service can be inserted so in some cases whatever driveway /lawn or pathways present have to come up

very strange what they have done so far there , but there is no way they can leave that laying across the path like that service has to be a certain depth

There is a practical limit to what they can actually do, when replacing old pipes. In our case they replaced the mains maybe three years ago. The original mains ran along the back gardens, with some gas meters at the rear where there were no through drives, others at the drive sides of others. They were unable to lay the mains at the rear, because so many had built garages, extensions etc. over the route, so the new main ran along the road at the front.

For those with no through drive to the back, they attempted to mole from front to rear, but the deep foundations prevented that. The only way was surface pipework run round the walls to the meters at the rear. Having a through drive, in my case they were able to mole along my drive and entirely underground to the side of house meter.

Next door adjacent, is one where they intended running along the wall, but he objected and was upset by that proposed route. To help Cadent out, I gave them permission to run next door's pipe up my drive alongside my own supply pipe.

Probably subbed out to some cheap contractor. You should expect a near invisible make good - including imprinted concrete, which can be repaired by a specialist but not your average navvy with a barrow of tarmac.
