Lintel failure? What is the cause of this cracking?

I would guess at rather than the lintel cracking, what ever was supporting the left hand end has been crushed down or compacted. The lintel if it cracked, would fracture near the centre, where most of the stress is, rather than at the end.

These photos show two different apertures in the garage and the cracking is different in/around each. There is cracking on another wall the other side too. The garage has been there for around 60 years.

Any chance of a really wide view, so we can see where in the general layout those cracks are located, including the roof?

The garage has a flat roof and the top of the brickwork is hidden behind the plastic fascia. Does that make any difference? I can try and get a photo further back if not.

If you are referring to photo 8, we have a garden gate that rests against the wall so the wall is a bit damp. These cracks have existed for much longer than anything we have done.

At a guess I'd say the original windows were timber and this cracking probably happened when they were replaced.

I agree to that as the cause of most of the damage, it looks as if the glazing unit have been made over size and been forced in - except for the corner by the fall pipe. Something has forced the corner out and I was assuming it might be due to an apex roof spreading, but it's a flat roof. Perhaps the roof timers have expanded and the expansion has applied pressure to that brickwork?

The lintel which has cracked in the middle, should not have snapped, there is hardly any load on it.

Perhaps the OP could investigate how the roof is supported and report back?

Wouldn't the lintel usually be wider than the window and sit on the brickwork?

but none of these extend past the window, so isn't that why they have failed?

I'm not sure they don't extend wider than the windows, it is difficult to tell from photos - I assumed they would, but the bit beyond the window width was hidden. If they don't extend wider than the windows, then they are entirely pointless being there at all. In which case I wonder how they managed to replace the windows without disturbing those lintels.
