I'm trying to sort out the issue of the two claws not retracting fully unless the door handle is snatched down quickly.

I had the mechanism removed and with the cover plate removed, couldn't actually see any damage. I took the handle's spindle lugs out which operate two shuttle rods which in turn operate a pivot lever that operates and sliding plate the pushes the claw rods backwards and forwards.

I put the mechanism back together and now the outside handle retracts the claws fully without effort but the inside handle still needs to be snatched down for full claw retraction. Just wear perhaps?

If only it were that simple.

I took the cover of the lock gear case and lubed it. The claw actuation has a dual mechanism because the latch, which operates on the inside handle only, has a split spindle shaft. I can resolve the claw problem by fitting a solid spindle shaft because that will allow the outside to work off the inside and retract the claws fully.

on that basis , the gearbox of the locking mechanism is broken inside, if you don't need the split spindle thwn you can leave it like that , with the solid spindle and have a few more years out of it , or you'll need to get a new gearbox
