Just got a message up on my PC screen:

Running perfectly fine on Win 10, but not good enough for Win 11.

Think Ill turn this into an advantage: if I don't upgrade, Win 11 will steer clear of my PC.

Last MacBook Pro lasted 6 years and was still working, the one before that went for 11 years. They cost more, but they last twice as long.

I’ve never bought into the Apple brand, but I have to say people who are, often seem to be pleased with them.

Ive heard they suffer less from spam and viruses.

I keep getting 'nudges' from them to say mine is suitable for W11 but I'm not changing.
From the people I've spoken to in our IT dept they say stay clear as it is a Beta version and not fully tested so you will be a guinea pig.
I didn't like W10 at first but now used to it so why change for the sake of change? It does everything I want it to.

A fundamental flaw in windows was the centralised register which can easily be hacked. Macs can get viruses and spam is more about where you go on internet and who has your email address. Hackers are basically lazy. Why write a key logger for 10% of the target when one .exe will hit 90%.

They are well designed however. My M1 based MacBook Pro can easily cope with every task. My work i7 with more memory runs the fan as soon as I start a blimin teams meeting. and then there is the battery. I charge my Windows computer every few hours. My Mac every few days.

I have no idea how old my current PC is. Probably closing in on 10 years.

Well built over-specced kit lasts, cheap stuff doesn't.

On Win 10, not seen any update requests yet. No idea why. Everything is working though, so happy to leave it as it is.

What annoys me with all this sort of stuff (including things like completing a purchase on Amazon and them pushing Prime) is whilst there will be a button somewhere to continue without agreeing to whatever it is they're pushing, it will be extremely small and often not located in an obvious place on screen.

Ok she's 80, but mum phoned me a couple of weeks ago re this Win 11 thing and, to her, it looked as though she had no choice but to go with it. I talked her through what buttons to press to continue as normal, but they don't make it easy.

Yeah yeah I get why, nevertheless it's frustrating.

I always thought I was 'into IT' but the older I get, the less this seems to be the case ...

Similar here, my mum was convinced she had to get a new laptop because of the pop-up incompatibility message.

It almost seems like a scam!

With a win 10 support date until at least Oct 2025, I managed to persuade her that it really wasn't an issue.

...and even after that, if there are no inevitable extensions, or MS lowers their upgrade criteria, Ubuntu's pretty good! :)

When I close down each night I get messages saying, "Update and shut down." or "Update and restart".
I just ignore them until one day they don't appear and it usually means it has happened when I boot up that day.
I currently have a problem with Word and Excel in that, when I open one or both of them, a box comes up saying "Configuring Word, (Excel), please wait while we configure your system." It can then take 2-3 minutes to load up. If I close the app down and try again later I get the same scenario.
So what I have to do is go into Updated Files in Control Panel and uninstall a certain file to make Word and Excel load up straight away. I now know that file by sight so it's much quicker but still a pain in the 'arris because at the next update it will put it back in again.

Yeah I remember the good old days with things like Office, you bought it, installed it, job done. Now you've to chose between 1,000,000 different licensing options and as you say, multiple update requests.

All under the guise of progress ;)

I was reluctant to change to 10 when Microsoft stopped supporting 7. However a knowledgeable friend said a I could select a function on 10 called 'Classic Shell'. I did this as soon as I changed over, and many functions on 10 now run with some of the familiar appearence and usablilty of 7. Not sure if 11 has Classic Shell though.

Correction: looks like they have Open Shell for 11.
