Dripping Tap- help needed please

I think you need some brute force. It looks like the crown pushes down on to the brass spline. You could possibly tap a wooden dowel in to the hole and try to tap it up. Alternatively wrap a leather belt around if and try to grab it with adjustable pliers, wiggling it as you pull it up.

Just buy a new tap.

Yeah. Coz once you've got the fecker off, you'll then be off hunting around the merchants to find a (1/4 turn?) cartridge to match... @Simon.j don't forget to take the tap handle/head with you when you go off to the merchants, as you'll need the splines to fit the head.

Thanks for all of the replies. When prodding around with a flat head SD I removed some lime scale and found another hole as displayed on the picture, below the handle hole. I've been pushing a screwdriver inside, trying to release a mechanism. Still no joy. Might try the belt tip that was mentioned tomorrow. Any more suggestions are welcome, cheers

You can see the splines of the cartridge spindle through the hole so there is nothing else securing it except friction and corrosion. It will eventually come off with wiggling (and waggling) and levering up but you may damage the chrome in the process. New tap time?

Can also see crater in the splines where the grub screw bit in, so defo nothing else holding head on.

But again... Not worth the aggro. OP will know when he's tried to get new cartridges.

I often help out behind the counter of my local trade counter and we have an in-house codeword when we see a customer approaching the front door with a plastic bag full of what we know will be bits of taps...

Tappy-time: means spending 10-20 mins going through the cartridge assortment boxes with a spline template, only to then sell them new taps.

We also have "O no": a code word for effing about looking for an o ring!
