Hi - I'm selling my house and the buyer has pannicked about the slight smell of gas that we have always had in the kitchen cupboard. We once had this checked out by someone (can't remember who, may have been BG or Transco) and they said it was normal.

Who do I call out to get it checked over, will it cost anything and will/should I get a certificate?

I am guessing it's Transco, that it should be free and that they wouldn't ordinarily certify it but could I demand it?

Any help would leave me well prepared.

National Grid (formerly Transco) or Scotia Gas if you are in some areas will visit and check for leaks for nothing if you phone and say you can smell gas, they may do a simple repair like tightening something loose, I have an idea they are limited to 30 mins work. However: If they can't fix it they will turn it off and tell you to pay someone qualified to do the repair.

Wales & West utilities came within the hour after I rang the National Grid number. He didn't find anything wrong with his first gadget but with his sniffer he found a small leak in the regulator.

Looks very much like the developer (this house is only 4 years old and has leaked since day one) did a sloppy job with some flux which caused the regulator to rust/leak.

I won't mention the developer's name but it sounds like IngsKoak.

Hats off to Wales and West.

4 year leak?!?!?

you've beaten my own record hands down. my governor leak only lasted 7 months before the wifes nagging made me phone transco

christ  wondered what that yellow sticker on the meter was for

Kev - my main point was about whether I would actually get some cert. or other giving it a clean bill of health and whether something that had been checked out ok previously would be considered an emergency and also free or not.

If he couldn't have fixed it within half an hour I'd have had to get a CORGI to resolve and pay.

Luckily, the guy who came was far more diligent and professional than the first guy a couple of years ago who said it was all right. This new guy was ex BG and replaced the kit without batting an eyelid.

So, in short, I CAN read stickers.

I have a huge propensity to withstand nagging. Besides, there's always the rubber hose.

my anti-nagging software is up to date but seeing as it was only a phone call to get some other poor sod to do some work i gave in.

if it was me to do the work i could have lasted a good 2 years ;)
