Due to shrinkage etc etc, I have a gap between the bottom of the basin and the pedestal in my bathroom. I'm guessing that this means the basin isn't getting as much support as it really needs (i.e. none from pedestal, just the wall it's attached to)

Should I try to fill the gap with something and if so, what would be recommended?

cheers!

how big is the gap?

lift the pedestal up against the basin so its supporting it, then pack at the bottom and silicone it

The gap is about 3mm or so. Pedestal is built into a mini shelf-type thing that hides the pipes, so raising the pedestal will not be easy. I was hoping to be able to do the packing between the basin and the pedestal.

3mm?
just silicone it because once the silicone has gone off it will support it

Yes, certainly no more than 3-4mm or so. If silicon can cope then I'll just do that.

cheers!!!
