Filling big holes behind skirtings

Hi all,

I own a relatively old house whose walls are wavy to say the least, anyway I've had new skirting boards fitted and obviously I have some large holes to fill between the board and the wall and just wondered if anyone could recommend a strategy for filling the holes? is there somekind of expanding filler that might be useful?

usually when i fit skirting i take along a tube of builders calk which is a sandable when dry paste that decorators use.

If there is a big gap stick some bonding down the back and then interior filler on top of that once it's dry. Caulk is only any good for small gaps so dont load that in. Also, caulk is not sandable as previously mentioned so make sure it's neat if you use it.

You cant sand the caulk in a tube..its normally smoothed out with a damp sponge or brush when applied..what type are you talking about Andy?

Thanks all for the repies.... actually I've just spent some time using some polyfilla to fill most of it and it's worked a treat!

rob have you just filled the top edge of skirting with polyfilla then sanded or have you loaded it well into the gap ? i have same problem and are staining skirtings afterwards cheers

Well since he aint been back here for four years and on the site for 6 months I think you might have a long wait for your answer..lol

So...as im a lovely lovely geezer

Ill answer it...

Theres a few things you can use...two pack coloured wood filler is good...but really pricey...and a pig to rub down...ordinary coloured wood filler/stopper is the same..like the man at the infertility clinic..it normally only comes in small pots.

You can either leave them so you have a decent straight line where the skirting meets the wall

Or...mix a coloured stain (preferably water based) with polyfilla and whack that in...working it right down the back as much as poss...or use cuprinols coloured flexible filler...which is like caulk..and great if you only have gaps of no more than 2-3 mm....

Or...pump water based gap grip down the back allowing it to shrink and form a hollow then finish with any of the above
