Okay, I'm disabled with balance problems so this is not something I can diy, but there are noises coming from the roof everytime there any wind. We are in a semi-detached and the neighbour hears it two. We have both checked everything we can think to check and my neighbout has been out on the street in the middle of the night looking at my aerial.

Its a hude beast bolted to the roof and the chimney and it clearly sways in the wind and could be knocking against the chimney

So here is what I'm thinking about doing

1. Putting in a loft aerial, and just getting someone to take the roof aerial down
2. Getting someone to replace the roof aerial
3. Getting someone to attach the roof aerial so it doesnt sway

I'm trying to decide on the best option and who to call, a roofer, a TV aerial specialist, I'm concerned also that dealing with the aerial might not fix the noise, its not loud but its persistent, and keeps me and the neighbours up at night

If you think the TV aerial is moving then best to get the TV aerial installer to refix again or better still move it to fix it onto wall bracket on the outer wall if possible.

Please be aware there are some cowboy TV installer out there ripping people off.

What sort of noise is it, is it a banging, tapping noise or wind tunnel noise etc?

masona,
thank you for your reply
both me and the neighbour were convinced that is was coming from inside our own house until we talked to each other, then we figured it must be coming from the chimney which is in the middle of building

its a scraping, scratching (slightly banging) type noise, it doesnt really sound like something banging repeatedly against something, but it does sound a bit like a window that isnt shut properly, or a bin lid blowing up and down but never quite being blown of the bin

we live on w very windy street and there are lots of noises at night tthat we have slowly but surely elliminated, this one is elluding us

also what is the best way to avoid the cowboys, I'm in Edinburgh, just on case anyone knows a reliable TV aerial guy

I'm wondering if the aerial lead cable is not tie to the pole correctly and it's flapping against the pole or the chimney breast and maybe that's why you can hear it from the chimney inside(?)

I don't know who to recommended for you though, they are ripping people off in my area, I've just fitted my aerial DAT 75 and they wanted £245 :!: Cost me £85 to do it myself and about an hour work, I'm in the wrong job :!:

The cable is definitely not as secured as it should be, maybe I just need someone with aroof ladder who is experienced working on roofs to take a look see, I'm thinking a roofer might be less likely to be a cowboy

LindsayO - we had exactly the same problem with a new Freeview aerial.

Every time the wind blew it was like something from a 'Slasher' movie  . A weird groaning, squeaking, scraping sound that transferred down the chimney breast. Nowhere in the house was immune to the sound.

Find a reliable aerial company, explain the issue and see what their hourly rate is.

A company local to me in Leeds charged £45.00 + VAT for one hour's labour. They simply redrilled and remounted the aerial and now all is quiet. :D
