relaying patio

Hi guys, i am hoping to relay a new patio using riven paving (precast type from diy shed)
At present i have 2x2 old grey pavers which are layed on good solid base of quarry dust well compacted over the years.
The new pavers are a about 1inch thinner, can i use a morter on top of the old compact quarry dust to bed new pavers.
patio approx 36 square feet

Yes. A good, thick mortar base is THE best way of laying flags, IMHO. Easier for the DIYer (and for the pro, come to that). Use a mortar of sharp and building sand, mixed 4:1 with cement.

total agreement with wabbitpoo. i always use a 4:2:1 mix as the building sand makes it a bit more workable, but each to their own!

HOw wet should the mix be?

We are laying some stones now and are using a mix that is just damp rather than properly wet. We are finding that there is little movement when whacking the slabs down with the rubber mallet.
Are we using a mix thats too dry???

yes and you may have too much under the slab. There comes a time when the pug will spread out under the slab as you compress it and it can be compressed no more.
