Can you get yourself a few months with a reputable fencer? Maybe don't let on what you're planning but get stuck in and get some more experience while you set yourself up. All the advice so far has been spot on and it's difficult to quantify importance but pay particular attention to income protection. Protect your income at source using accident cover etc. If you can get the equivalent of a couple of months salary in savings before you start to protect you in case of accident and try to find a policy that pays out after a month for instance (lower premiums than immediate payout). No one wants to be sat on their ar$e not being able to bring the cash in after an accident but being sat on your ar$e without insurance is a nightmare position to be in.

Didn't mean to sound pedantic originally but depending on personal circumstances it can be a massive chalenge going into something on your own.

You'll be fine just take any advice you can and if you want it badly enough, you'll get it

I'm self employed, dont have insurance but do have a broken leg
its a right hoot!
Nothing like trying to vault over the dog on crutch's and setting your recovery back a week either
Sympathy from the mrs is running low she's looking more like belzebub by the day

Do sort your insurance or you may never get round to it if work gets busy.

Yes I know what tools are used / required but was after any helpful hints as to what tools fencers have found invaluable either bought or makeshift.

Your question makes it sound as though you have no idea. I was trying to prompt you into informing us of your background and experience - obviously my method was not clear enough. I was expecting a reply like "Yeah I know about fencing, I've done loads for family and friends and really enjoy it. I was wanting to know if there is any equipment that I should definitely look at purchasing if I was to start up working for myself?" Instead you gave a sarky answer.
Thermo has also asked you clearly what your background/experience is but you haven't answered. Is it a secret?

Insurance that will pay you money when you're sick/injured costs a fortune.

best thing to do is work for a company while you set yourself up,.

your gaining experience you dont have
picking up tricks of the trade
going to find out how to price up
find out best suppliers

and your getting paid whil e you learn and set up
