Sorry...not sure I have posted this on the right part of the Forum.

While cleaning the outside of my windows today. There were lots of little red insects on the white plastic sills. The insects are red, about 1 mm diameter and when swashed are red like blood.
Any idea what they are?
Cheers.

we were cleaning up a house we are soon to be moving too , and they were in exactly the same areas as the OP mentions.

I did also notice them on the driveway .

they are red mites, surprised you have only just seen them,,,not sure if this is nationwide but during warm weather they come out en mass, they are normally on walls drives and brickwork but you can only see them on a white background (with my eyesight ) ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,quite harmless and stay outside

I have notice them too lately, the always seem to be on my block work when I brush it down.

Does anyone know where those red worms come from? I always find them under blocks I leave lying around on concrete and also underneath my sandbags - they obviuosly like the damp conditions but they seem to grow out of nothing!

Can they be used for anything? I always feel guilty and pick the blighters up and throw them onto the lawn - perhaps they would be best off in the compost??

Red Mites?

What do they live on, eat?

Plants, namely in your garden, also good for compost heaps (apparently) so maybe useful...if you can catch them :)

Red mites are bloodsuckers, feeding on birds mostly. They are a scourge of poultry keepers and pigeon fanciers. They feed on the birds at night and hide in cracks and crevices during the day.

Having kept poultry, I can tell you they are a horrible insect, very hard to control. I once left a shed to see how bad they would get. Within a week the shed was crawling with them, and the chickens would totally avoid that shed. If you went near the shed you'd get them all over you, not a pleasant experience. The one thing that kills them every time is creosote.

What has been seen here is probably spider mites not red mites.
