Skimming ceilings

Hi,

I am about to move into a 10 year old house and one thing I hate is the little swirls on the ceilings throughout. Not sure if this is strictly artex as the swirls are not really deep (perhaps only 3mm raised). I'd be very grateful if someone could tell me what my options are for getting rid of them throughout (is skimming the correct word?). Also a very vague prediction of cost would be good. If its going to be many thousands then I might just have to live with it for a while. For cost purposes the house is a pretty standard 4 bed detached size.

We had a plasterer charge us £150 for a bedroom, all 4 walls.

And £200 for a large dining room, walls and ceiling.

2 days work.

Cost will vary throughout the country, but may not vary in proportion with the quality or experience of the plasterer.

ModernHouse - where are you in the country?

Is the surface sound?

As a rough guide, I'd charge somewhere in the region of £7 - £10 per square metre depending on a few factors such as size of each ceiling, how high the ceilings are (probably only 2.4m if the house is only 10 years old), how many light fittings there are and ho much sheeting up I'd have to do beforehand.

One thing that would push it further up is if I needed to mask and sheet all the walls as well as the entire floor. Plastering's a messy game especially when it comes to ceilings so unless you're redecorating and replacing all the flooring it will take a fair amount of time to set up before attacking each room.

Thanks a lot for the replies all. Quite a co-incidence Fred, I'm in Cheshire also (Lymm to be more precise). I may consider doing the flooring too at the same time as I understand your point about having to mask the floor being time consuming. The ceilings are in good nick with minimal light fittings. I don't expect to complete the sale for another month but would seriously consider doing this work first thing before all furniture is in. If you have business contact details perhaps I could get you round for a quote?

No problem ModernHouse.

The flooring's less of a problem than the walls to be honest. Any masking is a pain in the bum but you get used to sheeting up floors as a matter of course although I always worry when plastering in a house where the flooring is to be retained in case I damage it and end up having to pay to replace it. Not happened yet but there's alays a first.

It's the walls that can be the biggest pain though.

a good plasterer will charge min £150 a day which is good when a builder charges £200 a day for a trade he doesnt specialise in which would u rather?

Down here a good plasterer would charge £200 per day plus materials.

Just had similar skimming done to my kitchen and utility room.

Both rooms and ceilings for £400.

I did use a scraper to take off the peaks from the dodgy paint swirly things so that it was easier to skim though.
