how much sand to render

can any one tell me how much sand is needed per m squared for rendering a wall 15 mm thick.got a small wall2.5 x7 m to render at home and wondered how many bags plastering sand to buy any one help with this one thanks

3(sand)to(cement)1 scratch coat 4 to1 top coat with 1 shovel hydrated lime per mix top coat remember to sbr slurry if not blockwork good luck

The rule of thumb I use is that one tonne of sand renders approximately 30 square metre of wall, 20mm thick.

Reduce proportionately. By my calcs that makes around 440kg for your wall... but I'd go for 20mm, myself, which would be around 580 kg. If you've not done it before, allow a bit more for wastage!

Make sure you use a proper plastering/rendering sand, though. Don't be fobbed off with any old sharp sand or building sand.

Try your local quarry, should be substantially cheaper than a builders merchant, especially if you collect it. ******* (my dad!) sells ******* but even so I'd be interested to see how the cost stacks up against your local builders merchant.
