I've never heard of this happening before, have you still got the tub of putty? Check the instructions. Did it get wet soon after it was applied? You're going to have to remove it and apply some more, maybe a differnet type if you think it's down to the one you used. Make sure the window frames are nice and dry, if they're holding a bit of damp try and dry them with a hair dryer and then apply the new stuff and hope for a few dry days. Oh and don't try and speed up the hardening (with a hair dryer) it'll go soft!

It should be ready to paint over after just a few days.

thanks
the window is facing sought, the sun or the rain may have hit it after it was applied. instruction are pretty much useless in that mater. I have done an other try on a piece of wood in door, also it is only 3 days it seems to get better. On the second test I did the newspaper thing to absorb some of the oil. thanks a lot.

It seems as you have used linseed oil putty. If you have and it’s on top of old putty or paint it will never go hard. It only goes hard when the oil can soak into the wood.

Hmmm.... it will harden eventually. Sounds as though there was too much oil in it to start with. Patience.
