The fan in my ensuite is driving me mad!

Is it a legal requirement to have it start everytime the light goes on?

There is a shower in there aswell as sink and toilet but there is also a reasonably large window too.

Can I get it altered to only have the fan on if the shower is on and the window closed?

Its just annoying lying there waiting for it to stop.

Might sound petty but its on off all night as the kids often use it too when they cant be bothered to go to main bathroom!

Has it not got an isolator, as it should have. My humidistat fan in the en-suite is also wired to a timer, so that it doesn't go on overnight.

Im going to go look.
Yes I know it makes me sound thick but Im not sure what to look for.
On the bedroom wall near to the door into ensuite is the light switch. high up on the wall there is wide switch and another switch. I cant reach these without going up ladders. I think one is for the shower.

yes, one looks similar to that, any reason why its so high up on the wall?
The other is definately for the shower.
So, if I get ladders and switch that one off, the fan wont work but the light still will?
(yes I could just try it but it saves me getting ladders out if not)

Also, are you supposed to switch the shower one off everytime as I leave it on constantly?

Probably, but can't tell as I don't know how it's wired :( Why not use a broom handle instead to flick the switch, save getting the ladders out.

it's good to have the fan running to keep condensation down while the bathroom is in use..

Do you mean people are too stupid ;) to turn the light off after using the bathroom?

Consider a centrifugal fan, which is quieter than an axial fan.

or your old fan might be getting noisy as it ages and the bearings wear.

johnd, not sure what type of fan it is but not very old as it is in a relatively new extension.

I always open the window when I use the shower and leave it open for about an hour afterwards.

We do switch the light off afterwards, its just me getting grouchy at the loud (seems loud in the otherwise still night) fan going on just because someone goes to the toilet for a few seconds.

It is in too awkward position to switch it on and off day and night.
I guess the answer is to ban using that toilet in the night! well ban all except me since that is the purpose of having it.

I can manage without the light on but the boys..... well, dont get me started on that topic again!

thank you both.

There is no requirement to have a fan in a room with a window, just as JohnD says good for removing excess moisture, consider having a timer fitted, sorted all our problems out. Or just turn it off.

A light-up toilet seat  ;)

I has a noisy fan in the bathroom. Took it down and disovered why:
1. the casing was craked and vibrating
2. the whole thing was loose in the ceiling, again vibrating.

Solved it by:
new fan, fitted into a wooden block.

I'll be round with my ladder asap...

While I'm there I'll fit a separate pull-switch for the fan, then you can turn it on and off whenever you like.
