Hired decorator crap work - Help!

Hello can anyne give me some advice. I got a decorator in from the yellow pages and he came round gave me a quote etc. He started work today and used 3 walls of £30 wallpaper and only did half the walls. He said the other roll was faulty and did not match up. i have found this in a black bag eith paste all over it and screwed up.

Now the work he has done is awful, its a big flower pattern which dioes not match up on any join. He has teared the paper at joins in at least 6 places, ranigng from 1 inch to 6 inches. The paper has been cut with what looks like a blunt knife so its all jagged. There are about 3 small holes in the paper. its peeling off at the joins (easy to fix i should think). Also he has started the 2nd wall and the there is big bubbles under the paper.

So the guy has wasted £90 worth of paper as i am not hapy wit hthe work. Am i in the right not paying for this work as it will all have to be redone. Also i will have to spend another £90 on wallpaper?"?" What can i do, he is coming back tomorrow with my house keys (which he should not have taken home)

What are my rights. Can provide photographs of work if you lke an example.

Lock up securely tonight, by any means.............

Tomorrow firstly, retrieve your keys, then point out the poor workmanship and tell him he is no longer required.

Do you not know anyone who has had some decorating done, by a reputable decorator, word of mouth is the best way of finding some one

Do you feel intimidated/ fearlfull of this guy? if so call police and discuss with them.

He is not a ' Decorator so dont pay him!!!! Though there are laws where he has a chance to rectify. 'at his expense' But I think you would be wise to get rid and take the loss on the chin...

Hope it turns out ok .. Maybe he might turn up with 3 replacement rolls

I told him that i woudnt be leaving house keys but he said he needed to go out at lucnh as he is diabetic and needed food etc. Suppose he could be making a copy of my keys, now getting a bit worried. have his mobile and a landline number for him and found him on Yell so shouldnt be too bad

dont feel scared of the guy he seemed a nice chap, my mate is coming round though to be safe

my neighbour just took a look and said it was poor. So i shouldnt pay him then ? Going to cost me £££ to get new wallpaper

I know of a few but they booked up for weeks on end

Get keys back first.

Be firm but polite and tell him his work is not up to required standard and don't change your mind.

Don't pay him any money.

Wait till you can get a decent decorator.

ok guys, I got ym keys back and told him it wasnt good enough.

He said its because its a plasterboard wall and its shrunk. The rips and tears were caused by plasterboard nails, I spend hours sanding the wall down so i know there were no nails.

Also the gaps between the paper could be filled with silicon ?!?! and the rips on the sides, top ansd bottom could be caulked out, i have never seen caulk over 1 cm thick.

He wasnt too hapy as we walked away he was shouting swear words and spitting on the floor and i think he actually walked back as if to start or say somehting i just shut the door. Hopefully he didnt cut my keys, they are Banham so arent that easy to get cut, i hope!!

I expect a brock through the window or somtthing, hopefully not though!

What a bully! Good for you standing up to him. Go girl! (or Go boy! if you're a boy!) Probably didn't copy your keys, but if he did and you get broken into, or get a brick through the window, call the police, you'll know who's to blame. It's sickening when people think they can intimidate or exploit and get away with it! But you stood up to him, and you'll stand up to the next bully!
